E! News host Giuliana Rancic has told People magazine that a surrogate carrying her last viable embryo recently miscarried and now she and her husband can no longer have children.
It's the latest blow in what has been a difficult year so far for the 40-year-old Rancic, whose comments about Disney Channel star Zendaya Coleman began the unraveling of a revamped "Fashion Police" after the death of Joan Rivers last year. She's also been dogged by rumors about her weight, or lack of it.
"It was painful," Rancic, 40, told
People about her surrogate's miscarriage. "We were so optimistic with this last embryo. We thought, 'This is definitely going to work. This is our last shot.'"
Giuliana and Bill Rancic's first child, Duke, who is now two, was born through a surrogate in 2012, and they were hoping for another child with three other embryos. Rancic herself is taking cancer-suppressing medication following a double mastectomy and a 2011 breast cancer diagnosis, noted People.
"We're open to everything," Rancic told People, who will be releasing her memoir "Going Off Script" on Saturday. "I think adoption is a beautiful gift you’re giving each other. And it's funny, I'm even more open to [adoption] than I was before. Because I think to myself, 'I love Duke so much, if I couldn't take care of him, I hope there would be someone else who would love him.'"
"Fashion Police," which Rancic co-hosted, has been put on hiatus until September, minus Kathy Griffin and Kelly Osbourne,
according to Variety. Osbourne bolted the show after a backlash from Rancic's comments about Coleman's dreadlock hairstyle on Feb. 23's show.
Rancic apologized on social media and on video about saying the dreadlocks Coleman wore on Oscars night probably smelled like "patchouli oil" or "weed."
Griffin, who replaced Rivers on the show, ended her run shortly after Osbourne's departure, noted Variety.
"E!'s comedy series 'Fashion Police' is going on hiatus and will return in September," the network said in a March statement. "We look forward to taking this opportunity to refresh the show before the next awards season. Our talented cohosts Giuliana Rancic and Brad Goreski, along with executive producer Melissa Rivers, will continue their roles as we evolve the show into its next chapter for the legions of 'Fashion Police' fans around the world."
