Global Selfies Take Over Social Media for NASA Earth Day Initiative

By    |   Tuesday, 22 April 2014 06:50 PM EDT

Global selfies merged science and social media on Tuesday, the 44th Earth Day, with NASA asking for selfies from around the world that are representative of our planet.

"For Earth Day we are trying to create an image of Earth from the ground up while also fostering a collection of portraits of the people of Earth," NASA said in a release. "Get outside and show us mountains, parks, the sky, rivers, lakes — wherever you are, there's your picture."

As part of NASA’s Earth Right Now campaign, the space agency encouraged people globally to take selfies and post them to any one of several social media sites using the hashtag #GlobalSelfie.

“On this Earth Day, we wanted to create a different picture of our planet — a crowd-sourced collection of snapshots of the people of Earth that we could use to create one unique mosaic of the Blue Marble,” NASA said.

The final #GlobalSelfie mosaic, as well as a video using the images, will be released in May after capturing photos posted to Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Google+, and Flickr.

As of Tuesday afternoon, NASA had received thousands of pictures via social media, spanning from Kansas City, Mo., to Baghdad, Iraq, to Antarctica. Here are just a few of them.
