Despite Kelsey Grammer's win of a recent Golden Globe award for Best Actor, the “Boss” star did not even garner an Emmy nomination.
Even though Grammer's cable series role, in which he portrays a Machiavellian Chicago mayor, was hailed by the critics, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences snubbed the multiple Emmy winner.
Yeterday evening host Jay Leno asked “Tonight Show” guest Grammer about the Emmy slight.
“It may have to do with several things, honestly, but I think it’s possible . . . I mean, I am a . . . I’m a declared out of the closet Republican in Hollywood,” said Grammer.
The actor posed the question, “Do I believe it’s possible that some young person, young voting actor — or even older voting member for the Emmys — would sit there and go, ‘Yeah, that’s a great performance, but ooooooooooooh, I just hate everything he stands for?’”
In a sarcastic tone, Grammer answered, “I don’t believe that’s possible.”
Grammer, who last won an Emmy in 2006, was then challenged by Leno, who noted that the actor had been awarded a slew of Emmys for his roles on the network TV shows “Cheers,” “Frasier,” and “The Simpsons.”
“Just after that last [2006 Emmy win], I became one [a Republican],” Grammer explained.
“Obviously I’ve been overlooked because the work is not up to standard,” Grammer sarcastically added.
