A Grand Forks Walmart shooting in North Dakota left one person and the gunman dead early Tuesday, while one other was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities confirmed to WDAZ-TV that the shooting involved three people — the two confirmed dead and one injured.
Grand Forks Police Lt. Derik Zimmel said in a press conference said the shooter was the only one with a weapon and that no police shots were fired, though he would not confirm whether the
gunman took his own life, The Associated Press reported.
Grand Forks Air Force Base told the Grand Forks Herald that an airman was involved, but officials have not yet explained how. The Air Force office of Special Investigation is reportedly working with law enforcement.
Zimmel told Inforum that police do not yet have a motive for the shooting, but it is not believed to be gang-related.
The injured person was transported to Altru Health System with gunshot wounds, though it's not yet clear how extensive the injuries are, Zimmel told the Herald.
As of 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, that person was in “satisfactory condition,” according to a news release from the hospital.
A few minutes after 1 a.m., officers responded to discover “multiple victims,” who were taken to the hospital, Deputy Police Chief Mike Ferguson told the AP.
Zimmel said the 911 call mentioned multiple shots fired.
Andy Legg was in the store at the time of the shooting and told WDAZ he heard “popping sounds” in the store. As he was leaving, Legg said he saw a Walmart employee covered in blood, saying it “didn’t look good.”
Shortly after 4 a.m., a SWAT team began searching a car in the parking lot with a robot, according to the Herald.
No names have been released yet pending family notifications.
