Grete Gaim's Creepy Eye Contacts Don't Help in Women's Biathlon

By    |   Tuesday, 11 February 2014 07:56 AM EST

Grete Gaim, the 20-year-old Estonian athlete who competed in the women's 7.5 kilometer biathlon sprint on Sunday, garnered some extra attention not so much for her ability, but for her intense, creepy eye contact lenses.

As intimidating as Gaim's blue contacts were, they did not help her in the competition. She finished in 71st place, more than 3 minutes behind gold medalist Anastasiya Kuzmina of Slovakia, the Huffington Post noted.

The biathlon, which is held in both the summer and winter Olympics, combines cross-country skiing with rifle shooting and is derived from a traditional exercise performed in the Norwegian military since the 19th century. Germany, Norway and Russia are the traditional leaders in the sport and have accumulated the most medals over the years.

Gaim's steely blue eyes weren't the only talk of the town at the Sochi Winter Olympics on Sunday.

Russian speed skater Olga Graf made headlines for her wardrobe malfunction after winning the bronze medal in the 3,000 meters competition.

After finishing at a personal best time of 4:03.37, Graf unzipped her skating suit down to her belly button and proceeded to take a cool-off lap around the skating rink, forgetting that she wasn't wearing anything underneath her suit, Fox News reported.

"I totally forgot," Graf said via the translator to reporters after the incident. "We have very good suits and they are very tight. You just want to breathe and you want to take off your suit."

"Only afterward did I realize that maybe this video will appear on YouTube," the 30-year-old Russian Olympian added with a laugh. "But I don't think it will be so bad."
