Condoms sold on Groupon Australia have been recalled because they are cheaply made counterfeit products, and many of them contain holes.
The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission said the condoms were sold by Edgelounge Enterprises Limited, trading as Citrus Beat, through Groupon from March 12 through April 10. The condoms were advertised as being the Durex brand.
A Groupon spokesperson told Mashable Australia the condoms were counterfeit, and said the situation is being investigated by Groupon to determine how the merchant was approved.
“Customers are our utmost priority at Groupon and we take their health and safety very seriously. All customers who purchased the counterfeit products have been proactively contacted by Groupon notifying them of the recall and have been advised to discontinue use immediately, dispose or return the goods, and seek professional medical advice if they have concerns about their health,” the Groupon spokesperson said. “A full refund has been processed to all customers."
Mashable said counterfeit condoms have been a problem, and reported that a raid in 2013 in China found 2 million condoms wrongly labeled as the Durex brand.
Predictably, social media had some fun with the topic, even though the ACCC warned of potential serious consequences, including sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies.
