Grumpy Cat is joining “Cats” on Broadway for one night, and some say the casting couldn't be more purrfect.
The forever-frowning Grumpy Cat, whose real name is Tardar Sauce, will guest star in “Cats” on Friday, and this will be the first real cat to join Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, which is based on T.S. Eliot’s “Old Possums Book of Practical Cats,” The New York Daily News reported.
“Being selected as the first real cat to perform in ‘Cats’ on Broadway is an honor. I hate it,” Grumpy reportedly said in a statement. “If I’m really being honest, I’d prefer to play the Phantom in ‘The Phantom of the Opera.’”
According to a spokesman for the show, the kitty “will be worked into the end of the show and will become an honorary Jellicle Cat,” The Associated Press reported.
It’s unclear whether Grumpy will be eligible for a Tony Award, Entertainment Weekly wrote.
Grumpy is an online phenomenon, having racked up more than 8 million followers on Facebook, the AP noted. The feline has also made a career for herself selling books, T-shirts, mugs and cat food of course. She’s also been in commercials, advertising cereal and different fast-food restaurants.
The “Cats” musical returned this summer after taking a 16-year hiatus from Broadway.
Twitter users shared their reactions to the news that Grumpy will be bringing her talents to Broadway for a night.
