Hamster Rises From Dead on Good Friday in England After Being Buried

One pet in England got into the holiday spirit Easter weekend, when a hampster appeared to die and then rise from the dead.

Tink, a 2-year-old hamster, was found "lifeless" in her cage March 28, the day before Good Friday.

Lisa Kilbourne-Smith, 23, and her boyfriend James Davis, 24, were watching Tink for a friend at the time, Stroud News and Journal reported. They called the pet's owner to inform her of the sad news.

The couple held a funeral for the rodent, wrapping her body in paper towel and giving her a proper burial in a flower bed in a grave that was a foot deep.

After paying their respects to their tiny furry friend, the hampster appeared to rise from the dead, chewing her way through the paper towels that surrounded her body and making her way out of the dirt grave. Tink climbed a pipe and landed in a recycling box.

The hampster then survived the coldest Easter on record by crawling into an empty cat food box which became her shelter through the night.

Kilbourne-Smith's dad Les found Tink while crushing boxes in the back garden for recycling.

"Suddenly a little face popped out of one of them which gave me a big startle I can assure you," he said. "We’ve nicknamed her Jesus because it was Easter when she came back from the dead. It’s amazing that she survived. ...The energy she had to dig herself out of that hole, then get along the wall and climb up into that recycling box was remarkable really."

Vet John Auld, partner at Aspinall Auld and Stevenson Animal Hospital in Abbeydale, Gloucester, told Stroud News and Journal that the pet went into hibernation after its body temperature dropped below a certain level on April 28.

"It has been known for owners to mistakenly believe that their pets have died when in fact they are only sleeping," Auld said. "However, I’m amazed by this hamster. The animal’s body temperature would have had to have risen to rouse it from hibernation. With the temperatures we experienced over Easter, one would think that the ground would have been far too cold for it to come out of its dormant state."
