Hank the Dog's Opening Day Attack: A Prank, or Was He Hungry?

By    |   Wednesday, 02 April 2014 10:09 AM EDT

Hank the Dog scored the mother of all April Fool's Day when OnMilwaukee.com reported the tiny mutt viciously attacked some other mascots during the Milwaukee Brewers baseball home opener on Tuesday.

Hank the Dog is a former stray turned unofficial mascot for the Brewers baseball team.

The prank involved the annual sausage race in which mascot's representing German sausage (bratwurst), Polish sausage, Italian sausage, Spanish sausage (chorizo), and a hot dog all race around Miller Park to kick off regular season play.

Hank the Dog had apparently been training to be a part of the annual sausage race, as seen in the video below, but appeared to have difficulty keeping up with the oversized sausage mascots, being that he was wearing a hot dog outfit that hindered his mobility.

In the phony article, OnMilwaukee.com reported that Hank appeared out of nowhere and "leapt toward Hot Dog [digging] its teeth into the racing sausage's foam casing."

"[The] Hot Dog began silently flailing and shaking back and forth in the hopes of getting Hank to let go, but the precious little puppy refused to release its vicious, blood-hungry jaws," OnMilwaukee.com continued in its purposely false account. "The other four sausages attempted to swat the mini-mascot off of Hot Dog, whose frail-looking human limbs began to twitch, but their attempts were no match for the murderous hunger fueling the ferociously fluffy canine."

The Milwaukee newspaper included make-believe interviews with other sausage mascots that witnessed the horror first-hand, including Haley Kent, who was inside the Chorizo costume during the race.

"We all tried to get him off of Hot Dog, but it's actually really difficult to move in these things, and Hank was not letting go of easily the biggest sausage he'd ever seen," Kent told OnMilwaukee.com. "You have to admire his tenacity and persistence. You have to fear it, too. Actually, mostly fear. But also admire."

Brewers' left fielder Khris Davis described the scene as "the saddest thing he'd ever seen. Like a 'Looney Tunes' skirmish, only a lot less funny," the newspaper noted.

The details behind the prank were not reported.

Hank the Dog, a male 2 to 3-year-old Bichon Frise mixed-breed, wandered into the Brewers' spring training facility at Maryvale Baseball Park in Phoenix, Ariz., before the start of the 2014 MLB season.

After the team unsuccessfully attempted to find his original owner, Brewers' employees took him to see a veterinarian and released his story to local media outlets, which resulted in more than 1,000 adoption requests from fans, according to the MLB blog Brew Beat.

Hank, named after legendary Baseball player Hank Aaron, was eventually adopted by Marti Wronski, the team's vice president and general counsel. He is now known to regularly attend home games with Wronski's family.
