Hannah Witheridge and David Miller, the two British backpackers found dead on a Thai beach last month, were reportedly killed by two Burmese men who confessed to officials this week.

The two suspects, identified only as "Saw" and "Win," appeared at a news conference this week where the Thailand police commissioner said that DNA samples from both men were found on Witheridge's body at the crime scene, the BBC News reported. They will be charged with murder, rape, and robbery.

Witheridge, 23, and Miller, 24, were found dead on a Koh Tao beach on Sept. 15 with severe head trauma.

Authorities claim the suspects raped and then murdered Witheridge, according to The Independent U.K. The men may have turned on Miller as he stepped in to try and stop the attack, the Brit's father told the newspaper.

"The sense from the Thai police is they believe the DNA evidence is crucial, they have established the link between these two men and the body of Hannah Witheridge," BBC Myanmar correspondent Jonah Fisher told the station.

Witheridge and Miller's bodies were found near an area that is popular among touring scuba divers and backpackers. Police immediately scrambled to find the culprits, likely out of pressure from the government, which was worried that the crime would slow the country's booming tourism industry, The Telegraph noted.

The suspects were arrested in the mainland port city of Surat Thani after they left Koh Tao.
