Harvey Jaws Hoax: Photo of Shark Swimming Flooded Street a Fake

This fabricated photo does not actually show a shark swimming the streets of Houston. (Screen grab of Twitter post/@Jeggit)

A picture of a shark swimming down a flooded street has resurfaced as a Hurricane Harvey hoax as Texans face some of the most brutal flooding the U.S. has ever seen.

While rain continues to soak southeast Texas and force tens of thousands of people from their flooded homes, a hoax has come back yet again, suggesting that a shark was trapped in the flood waters and is swimming on the Houston freeway.

The image has been retweeted more than 24 thousand times since Sunday, but it is the work of Photoshop rather than a real occurrence, according to The Washington Post.

Unfortunately, the shark hoax isn’t the only social media fabrication to show up as Harvey continues to devastate Houston and other areas of southeast Texas.

Another photo allegedly showed Houston Airport underwater, with several planes floating above a washed-out series of runways. This photo actually was taken at LaGuardia airport in New York and was modified to show what might happen by 2100 if climate change were allowed to continue unchecked, the Post reported.

Houston’s airports both remain closed Monday, and roads leading to them are flooded, but the image is false and not indicative of conditions there, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Another hoax: a photo said to be of Obama serving meals to Harvey victims is actually from Thanksgiving 2015.

Finally, a meme advising people to call a 1-800 number to reach the National Guard for help in the storm does not connect to any military; residents are advised to call 911 in an emergency and local nonemergency numbers for other help.
