Harvey Weinstein was arraigned Monday morning and pleaded not guilty to three new sex crime counts in Manhattan Criminal Court in New York City. He remained free on $1 million cash bail set at his previous arraignment.
The additional charges stem from July 2006 when the Hollywood mogul allegedly performed oral sex on an unidentified woman against her will, The New York Daily News reported.
Weinstein had pleaded not guilty on June 5 to two counts of rape and one count of first-degree criminal sex act connected to two other women.
Weinstein was indicted on the additional charges last week, CNN reported, and now is facing more prison time ranging from 10 years to life on one count of committing a criminal sexual act in the first degree and two counts of felony predatory sexual assault.
His attorney, Benjamin Brafman, said that the charges were “defensible indeed,” CNN reported.
“Any suggestion that Mr. Weinstein raped anyone, based on the overwhelming evidence that I have in my possession already, is a ludicrous suggestion, and Mr. Weinstein has of course also vigorously denied that suggestion,” Brafman said.
Assistant District Attorney Joan Illuzi said Weinstein would be restricted either to a house or apartment in Manhattan, the Daily News said.
“The charges he's facing now are substantially more serious,” she said, adding that “he should only be allowed to leave his home here in Manhattan for doctor's appointments or other emergency services.”
Weinstein was once celebrated as a top Hollywood producer but last year his career and reputation came crashing down after dozens of women emerged with allegations of sexual harassment and assault against him.
Among his accusers were actresses Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie and Ashley Judd, and it was not long before the many voices led to an industry-wide reckoning that saw other powerful figures facing similar accusations.
