Helen Hunt's 'Ride' Starts Filming; She Stars, Directs, Finances It

Helen Hunt, the Oscar-winning actress, has secured funding and the cast for "Ride," which she will star in and also direct.

Hunt, who won a best actress Academy Award in 2008 and was nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar for "The Sessions" last year, will also produce the movie, according to Deadline.com.

Hunt plays a strong-willed working mother of a 20-year-old New York University student who drops out of school and moves to California to become a surfer. The mother eventually chases him down in California and the two learn a lot about themselves.

"Ride" will begin filming in Los Angeles on Aug. 5. Hunt stars with Luke Wilson, "Dexter's" David Zayas, Mike White, Richard Kind, Leonor Varela, Elizabeth Jayne, and Brenton Thwaites.

The first time Hunt directed was in 2007 with the comedic drama "Then She Found Me." Opposite Bette Midler, Hunt plays a librarian who rediscovers her birth mother, after her adoptive mother dies and her marriage ends.

Thwaites, who will play Hunt's son in "Ride," and had a role in "Blue Lagoon: The Awakening." White recently completed a run as the co-creator of the HBO series "Enlightened" with Laura Dern.

Wilson, who will play the surfing teacher in "Ride," has roles is several upcoming movies, including "Dear Eleanor," "Anchorman: The Legend Continues," "A Many Splintered Thing," and "The Skeleton Twins." Wilson had a recurring role on "Enlightened."

Hunt started working on "Ride" two years ago.

Lizzie Friedman, Sanbar Productions, and Moon Blauner join Hunt as producers, while Matthew Carnahan will serve as executive producer.

This year, Hunt stars in the movie "Decoding Annie Parker" with Aaron Paul and Alice Eve.
