Helen Mirren: If I'd Had a Daughter, She'd Have Learned the F-word

If she had had daughters, their first words would have been four-letter ones, Helen Mirren told the Daily Mail over the weekend.

The 67-year-old Oscar winner opened up about her experiences with sexism in the entertainment industry and how women were mistreated in the '60s and '70s.

"If I'd had children and had a girl, the first words I would have taught her would have been 'f— off' because we weren't brought up ever to say that to anyone, were we?" Mirren said to the Mail. "And it’s quite valuable to have the courage and the confidence to say, 'No, f— off, leave me alone, thank you very much.' You see, I couldn’t help saying 'Thank you very much,' I just couldn’t help myself."

Mirren, who has been married to American director Taylor Hackford since 1997, never had children of her own.

"I'm just not interested. I've no maternal instinct whatsoever," Mirren told ContactMusic.com in 2007. "And I don't think I'm so unusual. I think an awful lot of women don't really want children but feel they ought to. They think there's something wrong with them if they don't want to, but it's not true."

Always a spitfire, Mirren made headlines in May when she unleashed a profanity laced rant against a group of parade performers after they interrupted a performance of her stage show "The Audience" in London.

Mirren reportedly marched outside during intermission — in full Queen Elizabeth II wardrobe and makeup — and berated the group.

"This little old lady came running out in a green dress, pearls, and a tiara and headed for the conductor," band organizer Joe O'Leary told the Daily Mirror. "She was saying, 'shut the f— up, people have paid f—ing a hundred pounds for their theater tickets.' She said the f-word about 20 times. I kept saying, 'we didn't realize' and she was like, 'just shut the f— up.' You couldn't get a word in edgeways."

"Red 2," Mirren's new movie starring Bruce Willis, Mary-Louise Parker, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, premiered over the weekend.
