Henry Cavill's #MeToo moment went off the tracks in a GQ Australia interview when he launched into a lament about the lost art of flirting, and social media pounced.
The "Man of Steel" star who has appeared in three movies portraying Superman appeared to say the right things in the interview before his comments turned to defending some manly behaviors, according to Newsweek magazine.
"I know there have been situations with people I've worked with being perhaps overly familiar with some of the actresses," Cavill, 35, said in the GQ interview. "But, I've always walked up to them and said, 'Hey, are you all right? That's creepy.'
"Stuff has to change, absolutely. It's important to also retain the good things, which were a quality of the past, and get rid of the bad things.”
So far, so good.
Then Cavill's interview with GQ's Adam Baidawi took a turn when he suggested that the line between sexual harassment and flirting was vague.
"I think a woman should be wooed and chased, but maybe I’m old-fashioned for thinking that," Cavill said. "It's very difficult to do that if there are certain rules in place. Because then it's like: 'Well, I don’t want to go up and talk to her, because I'm going to be called a rapist or something.'
"Now you really can't pursue someone further than, 'No.' It's like, 'OK, cool.' But then there's the, 'Oh why'd you give up?' And it's like, 'Well because I didn't want to go to jail?'"
The comments stirred up a hornet's nest on social media.
Some, though, came to Cavill's defense.
