A hero dog is recovering after he protected his owner from a rattlesnake during their morning walk.

When Arizona resident Paula Godwin was walking her dogs last week, she nearly stepped on a rattlesnake stretched out on the trail. She would have, she said, had it not been for her bolden retriever puppy Todd.

“So this morning was up bright and early to go on a hike on 7th street carefree,” Goodwin posted on Facebook. “It was a beautiful morning but as we were walking down the hill I literally almost stepped on a mf rattlesnake. But my hero of a puppy Todd saved me He jumped right in front of my leg were I surely would have got bit. This is what a hero looks like.”

She posted emojis of a cactus and a rainbow, followed by, “please say a little prayer for my sweet hero.”

The snake bit Todd on the right side of his face, and Goodwin rushed him to Anthem Animal Hospital, according to AZ Family. He’s going to be OK but will have a swollen face for a while.

Goodwin’s Facebook post went viral, receiving more than 1,900 shares, and 1,700 comments.

Local station Fox10’s Stefania Okiolie posted a video of the pup and owner on Twitter.

“This golden retriever in Carefree, AZ stepped in harms way to stop his owner from getting bitten by a rattle snake during a walk....& he was bitten instead,” Okiolie reported with the video. “Let’s wish Todd speedy recovery! He’s only 6 months old!”

One replied with a poem dedicated to the hero dog.

Others celebrated Todd’s heroism and wished him well.
