Heroic Pony Protects Her Foal During Barn Fire in Texas

By    |   Tuesday, 22 April 2014 05:41 PM EDT

A heroic pony and her baby survived a barn fire earlier this month in Texas after the mother protected her foal, but their recovery is proving to be painful and costly.

The mother, Bella, saved her foal, Butterscotch, by protecting the 2-week-old pony from the brunt of the fire in a barn near Alvarado, Texas.

"It's just that mother-daughter bond. It's an instinct," Whitney Hanson of the Humane Society of North Texas told WFAA-TV in Dallas about the heroic pony. "She was ready to die for her baby."

Hanson said Bella backed her foal into a corner of the barn and shielded her from the flames and the falling debris.

While both mother and daughter survived, their resulting burns have to be treated twice a day with a disinfectant to prevent infection. The treatments are said to be painful and expensive.

The horses’ owners had to surrender the animals to the care of the humane society because of the prohibitive cost of treating the injuries. As a result, through Facebook and other channels, the Humane Society of North Texas is trying to raise $4,000 to cover the cost of the medical treatments and care that are needed before the horses can be put up for adoption, which is expected to happen later this summer.

The Humane Society of North Texas is accepting donations for Bella and Butterscotch's recovery on their website and by check.
