Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are clashing again, this time in her new book "What Happened," with the former secretary of state charging that Sanders' insurgent bid for the Democratic presidential nomination caused "lasting damage" to her campaign.
Tom Watson, one of Clinton's top supporters, posted a page from the upcoming book on Twitter Monday, in which Clinton charged Sanders' supporters of being sexist and that the senator from Vermont's real reason to get in the race was to disrupt the Democratic Party instead of winning, The Washington Post reported.
"When I finally challenged Bernie during a debate to name a single time I changed a position or a vote because of a financial contribution, he couldn't come up with anything," Clinton said in the book, according to the post.
"Nonetheless, his attacks caused lasting damage, making it harder to unify progressives in the general election and paving the way for Trump's 'Crooked Hillary' campaign. I don't know if that bothered Bernie or not," the excerpt continued.
Clinton appeared to thank Sanders for campaigning with her, but then takes the compliment right back by pointing out that the registered independent is not in the party.
"But he isn't a Democrat — that's not a smear, that’s what he says," Clinton wrote. "He didn't get into the race to make sure a Democrat won the White House, he got in to disrupt the Democratic Party. … I am proud to be a Democrat and I wish Bernie were too."
Sanders relentlessly attacked Clinton for giving big money speeches to Goldman Sachs during the primary while staking out positions to the left of Clinton, including a surcharge tax on billionaires, free college, and Medicare-for-all, the BBC News noted.
Sanders won the Democratic primaries in Michigan and Wisconsin, usually loyal Democratic states that President Donald Trump captured in the election and eventually helped him win the White House.
Clinton's "What Happened" is expected to be released next week.
