Hillary Clinton and Katy Perry united at the 12th annual UNICEF gala Tuesday night, but it was an unexpected reunion for the singer-songwriter who supported the former Democratic presidential candidate during the presidential election.
Clinton surprised Perry on Tuesday, showing up at the UNICEF Snowflake Ball in New York, presenting the singer with the Audrey Hepburn Humanitarian Award, CNN reported.
“I’ve gotten to spend time with her and I know how deeply she cares about making our world a better place,” said Clinton, who received a standing ovation from those who attended the gala, CNN noted. “She is serious about understanding the complex problems we face and pulling people together to solve them.”
“We need champions like Katy now more than ever, her passion, her energy and, yes, her voice, louder than a lion,” Clinton added.
Perry was surprised when Clinton took the stage to present her with the award, CNN noted.
“I’ve always had a voice, a singing voice, but I’ve never had a voice like I’ve had before,” Perry said, per CNN. “Hillary has lit that voice inside of me, and that light will never go out, it will continue to get brighter and brighter and brighter. Thank you Hillary.”
According to Fox News, Perry was open about her support of Clinton during her run for the White House and even campaigned for her across the nation.
Peter Lamm, the chairman of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF and co-founder of the private-equity firm Fenway Partners, said the fundraiser has gained support from both political parties over the years, Bloomberg noted.
“We’ve had very good bipartisan support, I believe, because the cause of children is pretty universal,” he said, according to Bloomberg.
The gala “honors UNICEF’s lifesaving work for children throughout the globe” and the event has been able to raise $27 million in the past 11 years, according to Fox News.
Perry has been an ambassador with the UNICEF since 2013.
Clinton said Perry, with UNICEF, has “visited the poorest places on Earth and lent her voice to kids who would otherwise be voiceless,” Bloomberg noted.
“She has put a spotlight on child poverty and has encouraged the empowerment of women and girls,” Clinton added.
