Clinton’s tweet was retweeted nearly 10,000 times.

Clinton, also a former U.S. first lady and the one heavily favored to become the Democratic nominee for the 2016 presidential election, met the band members while attending the Women in the World Summit in New York.

In August 2012, Russian authorities imprisoned Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina for “hooliganism” after the pair performed a 40-second song in a Moscow cathedral denouncing Vladimir Putin and then posting the video online. Alyokhina is now an activist for prisoners' rights after being released in December, just before the start of the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina were kicked out of Pussy Riot in February.
