Hitler Double Arrested by Austrian Police for Glorifying Nazi Era

A Hitler double was arrested Monday by Austrian police after going out in public dressed as the dictator.

The man, who sported an Adolf Hitler-style mustache, had a similar haircut, and wore "a suit reminiscent of Hitler," was seen Saturday outside the house in which Hitler was born and in a local bookstore browsing magazines about World War II, the daily newspaper Oberoesterreichische Nachrichten reported, according to Reuters.

The paper also said the man identified himself in a local bar as "Harald Hitler."

The 25-year-old Hitler double was arrested Monday night in Braunau am Inn, Hitler's birthplace, a police spokesman said.

"It is definitely not a carnival joke or an art project, the young man knows exactly what he is doing," the spokesman said.

Hitler, born in 1889, led Nazi Germany into World War II and the Holocaust. Glorifying Hitler or the Nazis is a crime in Austria, which Nazi Germany annexed in 1938.
