Holly Bobo's Mom to Press: Don't be Distracted by Court 'Circus Sideshow'

By    |   Thursday, 29 May 2014 12:27 PM EDT

Holly Bobo's mother Karen pleaded with the media outside a Tennessee courthouse Wednesday, asking reporters to remain focused on her daughter's 2011 disappearance and not get distracted by the ongoing "lawyers' circus sideshow."

Bobo, a 20-year-old nursing student at the time, disappeared from her family's rural home near Parsons, Tennessee, in April 2011. Police have since arrested two West Tennessee men, Zachary Adams and Jason Autry, and charged them with murder and kidnapping in connection to Bobo's disappearance, despite the fact her body has yet to be found, The Associated Press reported.

In an attempt to recover Bobo's body, prosecutors granted the initial suspect, 29-year-old Shayne Austin, immunity from various charges, including "all charges arising out of the disposal, destruction, burial, and/or concealment of Holly Bobo's deceased body," according to court document.

That agreement has since been revoked by prosecutors who claimed Austin was not being cooperative and truthful with regards to the recovery of Bobo's body, considering he originally told prosecutors that he could lead them to where the body was buried, the AP noted.

On Tuesday, Decatur County Chancellor Carma D. McGee ruled that she could not settle the ongoing dispute between the prosecution and Austin's attorneys who challenged the immunity withdrawal. McGee reportedly decided that only a criminal court can settle whether prosecutors can revoke an immunity agreement.

Appearing before reporters on Wednesday, Holly Bobo's mother, Karen Bobo, said, "Our presence is for Holly, our voice is for Holly, and my daughter deserves that, and we’ll be here all the way."

Karen Bobo said she believes the defendants' lawyers plan to "get the focus off of justice for Holly and on this circus and sideshow," The Jackson Sun reported.

"That’s not what it’s about," she said. "Justice for Holly is justice for all missing children, people, anyone who has been abducted or anyone who has been a victim."

According to The Jackson Sun, the mother's media address is the first time a Bobo family member has spoken to the press since March, when the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s hit Adams with kidnapping and murder charges.

"I'm doing this today asking you, please don’t forget what this is all about," she said. "That is justice for Holly. She is the victim."
