Honda recalled an additional 2.23 million of its vehicles equipped with potentially explosive air bags made by Takata Corp. on Wednesday.

"Honda's recall includes older model years dating to 2005, but also has some newer vehicles from as recently as the 2015 and 2016 model years," The Associated Press reported.

"The recall brings to about 24 million the number of vehicles recalled in the U.S. due to Takata inflator problems that have caused at least 11 deaths and 139 injuries worldwide."

The additional recall brings the total number of affected Honda vehicles worldwide to 5 million.

The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. auto safety regulators demanded automakers expand their recalls after Takata determined certain driver side airbag inflators (called PSDI-5) are defective, as well as after a Takata inflator ruptured and killed the driver of a Ford pickup truck.

Honda said replacement parts aren't ready yet for the recalled vehicles, but will be ready by this summer. The replacement inflators will not be made by Takata, but an altogether different company.

A Honda press release obtained by Autoblog.com listed the following vehicles as comprising the recall:

2005-2012 Acura RL
2007-2011 Honda CR-V
2007-2016 Acura RDX (early production MY 2016 vehicles only)
2007-2014 Honda Ridgeline
2009-2014 Honda Fit
2009-2014 Acura TL
2010-2014 Honda FCX Clarity
2010-2014 Honda Insight
2010-2013 Acura ZDX
2011-2015 Honda CR-Z
2013-2016 Acura ILX (early production MY 2016 vehicles only)
