Hoverboards have figured prominently in movies and literature for decades, and now a Utah-based company has made them a reality for the very first time.
According to Gizmag.com, French jet ski champion Franky Zapata helped launch a jet-powered swimming device, the Flyboard, in 2011, and now he's refined that idea into a full-blown hoverboard, aptly named the Hoverboard by ZR.
The board, which can be pre-ordered for $2,675, is sure to catch on as the newest must-have toy for the beach or the lake. For those who may not be ready to fork over the cash, the primary wholesale dealer, Rocky Mountain Flyboard, is also planning to distribute them to aquatic sport shops that will rent them out by the hour or day.

The board itself resembles a wakeboard that you might see being towed behind a boat, however the Hoverboard is self-propelled by its own on-board jet that uses a trailing 59-foot-long hose to draw in water. As the board propels its rider up to 15.5 mph and launches them up to 16.5 feet off the wake the jet stream and hose make for a striking comet-like silhouette.
Riders willing to part with just a little more dough can also get the Electronic Management Kit, which gives the rider a remote control for the throttle.
The board must be used in water at least 13-feet-deep, and a one hour training session is required before trying it for the first time.
Hopefully, this is not another hoax like the one
Tony Hawk perpetrated in a March "Funny or Die" video promoting a fictional HUVr craft.
