Actor Hugh Jackman revealed Thursday that he had skin cancer removed from his nose and credited his wife for spotting it.

Jackman, who was nominated for an Academy Award in 2013 and won the Golden Globe for best performance in a musical or comedy for "Les Miserables," posted a picture of himself after the procedure to remove the cancerous growth on Instagram with a message, referring to his wife Deborra-Lee Furness.

"Deb said to get the mark on my nose checked. Boy, was she right! I had a (basal) cell carcinoma. Please don't be foolish like me. Get yourself checked. And USE sunscreen!!!" the message stated.

Basal cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer that occurs in areas of the skin that receive the most sun exposure. Basal cell cancers usually grow slowly, but if treated early rarely spread or metastasize to nearby lymph nodes.

Jackman appeared in three movies this year: "Prisoners," which was released in September; "The Wolverine," in July; and the comedy "Movie 43" in January.

"Wolverine" grossed $136 million since its summer release. Jackman's largest grossing non-Wolverine movie was when he lent his voice to the animated hit "Happy Feet," which grossed $241 million in 2006.

He will star in "X Men: Days of Future Past" next year.
