'Hunger Games' Box Office No. 1, Smashes Opening Record (Video)

By    |   Monday, 25 November 2013 08:19 AM EST

Not only did "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" take the No. 1 spot at the box office this weekend, it also obliterated the record for highest-grossing November opening ever.

The second film in the "Hunger Games" series raked in a massive $161 million during its opening weekend, movie distributor Lionsgate told the Los Angeles Times. That number was enough to surpass the previous November record-holder — "Twilight Saga: New Moon's" $142.8 million — but not enough to take the "best opening of the year" title away from "Iron Man 3," which premiered in May with $174 million.

Starring Academy Award-winner Jennifer Lawrence, "The Hunger Games" is based on the bestselling book trilogy by Suzanne Collins about a dystopian world where children must take part in an annual, public fight to the death.

The first film, "The Hunger Games," scored $152 million its first weekend at the box office. Exit polls show that the sequel is drawing in a broader audience, resulting in higher profits. According to the Times, the "Catching Fire" audience is 12 percent more male than it was for the original film, raising the proportion of male audience members to a healthy 41 percent.

The final "Hunger Games" book, "Mockingjay," will be split into two films that will be released in 2014 and 2015.
