A hunter, stunned by last week's Florida school shooting that ended 17 lives, decided to hand over his AR-15 rifle to the cops, saying "I don't need it," according to USA Today.
In a Facebook post, Ben Dickmann said that although he was a responsible and highly trained gun owner, he no longer needed the rifle, which was a variant of the rifle used in last week's attack.
"No one without a law enforcement badge needs this rifle," he said, adding that it was a "tool" he no longer had a use for.
"A tool, by definition makes a job/work easier," he said. "Any 'job' i can think of legally needing doing can be done better by a different firearm."
Dickman instead decided it was time to hand his rifle over to the Broward Sheriff at the Tamarac Post.
"I could have easily sold this rifle, but no person needs this," he said. "I will be the change I want to see in this world. If our law makers will continue to close their eyes and open their wallets, I will lead by example."
Dickman told NPR that the thought first came to him after the Las Vegas massacre, but he only really took initiative to hand the rifle over after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, "where it really hit home."
The Florida hunter is not the only one to give up his firearm in wake of the mass shooting incident.
In New York, Scott Dani Pappalardo posted a video of himself sawing his AR-15 gun in half, CNN reported.
"I've decided today, I'm going to make sure this weapon will never be able to take a life," he said in the now viral video, according to Time. "The barrel of this gun will never be pointed at someone. I mean, think about it. Is the right to own this weapon more important than someone's life?"
