A storm moved quickly through Southern California on Monday and dumped so much hail on Huntington Beach that it appeared to turn white.
Photo after photo uploaded on social media showed the beach littered with hail.
The Los Angeles Times reported the pea-sized hail at Huntington was layered about an inch deep.
The Times said the storm also brought flash flood warnings, possible water spouts, and dangerous lightning to the area.
The Los Angeles County Public Health Department warned people away from Los Angeles County beaches until 6 a.m. on Wednesday.
“A rain advisory is issued when there is significant rainfall that may cause bacteria levels in ocean waters to increase,”
the Health Department said. “Bacteria levels can increase significantly during and after rainstorms, as contaminants within the runoff enters the ocean. Bacteria levels may remain elevated up to 3 days depending upon the intensity of the rain and the volume of runoff. Elevated bacteria levels in ocean water may cause illness, especially in children and the elderly.”
