An I-95 bus crash in Connecticut Monday afternoon injured dozens who were on their way to the Mohegan Sun Casino. The accident shut down the busy freeway in Madison for more than four hours.
The bus, chartered by Dahlia Inc. and operated by VMC East Coast Travel, was transporting casino-goers from New York City to the
Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, according to NBC Connecticut.
Authorities told Fox61.com that the driver said he was merging right from the left lane when he lost control of the bus on the snow-covered freeway near Exit 61 and hit a metal barrier. The crash caused the bus to roll over.
The station said nearly two dozen of the 55 people aboard were injured, mostly in the neck area. All of the wounded passengers were listed in critical but not grave condition, Fox61.com reported. Four remain at Yale-New Haven Hospital as of Tuesday.
The normally busy I-95 north was closed for about four and a half hours after the crash, reopening around 5 p.m. Monday evening.
"We continue to monitor the situation closely and receive updates in real-time,"
said a statement from Connecticut Gov. Dannel Mallory's office. "Public safety is our top priority and our office continues to work with state agencies and emergency management officials to that end."
"Our thoughts are with those who are injured, and we extend our gratitude to the first responders who are working to protect the safety of all those involved. We urge all those who must travel to use added caution, allow extra time to travel, and reduce speeds as conditions warrant," the statement continued.
