Iams Food Recall; Eukanuba Also Pulled From Shelves in Salmonella Scare

By    |   Thursday, 15 August 2013 03:32 PM EDT

Iams and Eukanuba brands of dry dog and cat food are being recalled because of a possible salmonella contamination, Proctor & Gamble and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday.

Routine testing determined some of the pet food made during a 10-day period could have been contaminated. Proctor & Gamble said the recall was “a precautionary measure” and that no wet food or pet treats were affected.

The list of dog and cat food being recalled can be found at the Food and Drug Administration's website.

“Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products,” the FDA said in a news release.

Symptoms for people who have become infected include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever. Pets suffering from salmonella poisoning may be lethargic and have diarrhea, fever, or vomiting.

The FDA stated that “no salmonella-related illnesses have been reported to date in association with these products.”

The Food and Drug Administration noted the recalled products affect just one-tenth of 1 percent of total annual Proctor & Gamble pet food production.

Anyone who has purchased the potentially contaminated product should stop using it immediately and throw it in the trash. For more information, contact a Proctor & Gamble's toll-free hot line at 800-208-0172, or visit Iams or Eukanuba's websites. The toll-free line is available from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST on weekdays.

Pet food recalls are not unusual. More than two dozen recalls for dog and cat food have occurred so far this year, according to the Dog Food Advisor website. Proctor & Gamble earlier this year expanded a recall of its Natura pet food line because of positive salmonella tests.
