Idris Elba shot down rumors that he is in the running to play the next James Bond, saying he is too old for the role.

"I keep saying if it were to happen it would be the will of a nation because there hasn’t been any talks between me and the studio about any of that," Elba said in an interview that aired Thursday on ABC's "Good Morning America." "But everywhere I go people want that to happen, so."

The 43-year-old British actor went on to say, "But if I’m really honest man, I think I’m too old for that man, running around in cars and ladies and martinis, who wants to do that? Sounds terrible."

Elba's name was mentioned in an email from a Sony executive that was leaked during the studio's December 2014 hacking, the New York Daily News reported. The role is currently held by Daniel Craig, who is under contract for a fifth movie but not interested in returning.

Other actors who are considered candidates for the James Bond role include Tom Hiddleston, Aidan Turner, and James Norton.

Roger Moore was 45 when he appeared in "Live and Let Die" in 1973. He was 57 in his last appearance in 1985's "A View to a Kill." David Niven was 57 when he appeared as James Bond in "Casino Royale" in 1967.

Elba's most recent role is as a villain in "Star Trek Beyond." He also works in music and fashion.

Twitter users shared their thoughts about the possibility of Elba starring in the James Bond franchise.
