An Illinois inmate convicted of murder escaped from prison this week by attacking and overpowering a guard, then stealing his keys, uniform, and vehicle.

NBC Chicago reported that Kamron T. Taylor, 23, staged his jailbreak around 3 a.m. Wednesday at the Jerome Combs Detention Center in Kankakee County.

"We are in search mode," said Deputy Ken McCabe. The U.S. Marshals Service's Fugitive Task Force has been asked to help in the search.

Police say Taylor took the guard's brown 2012 Chevy Equinox, and is considered armed and dangerous. They soon found the vehicle abandoned within the county, but Taylor remains at large.

They also said he has a history of escape attempts. According to The Associated Press, he initially escaped briefly after being arrested, but was caught just a few blocks away. In February, he tried to escape from the courthouse after being found guilty, and was wrestled to the ground by guards.

He was found guilty of first degree murder for killing 21-year-old Nelson Williams Jr. during a botched robbery at Williams' home in Kankakee. He is awaiting a sentencing.

The Kankakee County Sherriff's office released information about Taylor on Twitter.
