BGR.com reported the iOS 7.1 beta is available for a range of Apple products, including the iPhone 5c, iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPad Air, third- and fourth-generation iPads, iPad 2, iPad mini with Retina display, and iPad mini.

"iOS 7.1 beta 1 includes a number of bug fixes and (seriously needed) performance enhancements," Zac Hall wrote for 9to5Mac.com. "A few other changes include a new toggle for 'dark keyboard' in the accessibility settings and an option to upload 'burst mode photos' to Photo Stream for iPhone 5s users.

"Toggling 'bold text' no longer requires restarting your device as it has up to iOS 7.0.4 and can be found in the text size menu now in addition to the general accessibility menu. A new 'auto HDR mode' appears in the beta as well as flash indicators when auto flash exacts to activate," Hall continued.

Jayneel Patel, managing director of Openxcell, said there have been some concerns about the iO7's role in the performance of some applications.

"Certainly it takes three or four shots for the developers to fix the things that iOS7 is currently facing," Patel said in an Openxcell news release on WhaTech.com. "This suggests that apps are having recital issues in double as many areas as they normally do."

In addressing Openxcell's iPhone app developers' concerns, Patel said, "To our surprise, after the transition from iOS 7 to iOS 4, 5 and 6 we couldn't find any sort of spike in performance issues as well as UI rendering issues."

Jason Parker, of CNET.com, wrote in a review that while the updates will make the Apple products easier to use, there are some drawbacks.

"Besides the massively overhauled design and Control Center, there are few ground-breaking new features," CNET.com. "The flat design concept favors space over information so you'll generally need to do more scrolling to get the info you need. Some new features aren't available for iPhone 4 and 4S users."
