iOS 8 Unveiling May Share Spotlight With a New Apple Gadget

By    |   Monday, 02 June 2014 11:18 AM EDT

Apple is set to unveil the iOS 8 operating system for iPhones and iPads at its annual World Wide Developers Conference Monday, likely detailing new health and fitness apps, celebrating its recent acquisition of Beats Electronics, and maybe, just maybe, announcing a new gadget.

CEO Tim Cook is likely to MC the San Francisco event as his predecessor, founder Steve Jobs, often did, at the Moscone Center, CNN Money reported.

Most expect that the company's new "Healthbook" app will be the main focus of the day. Healthbook is likely to include features that monitor the user's biometrics, like heart rate, activity, sleep, and more, turning the iPhone into a mass-market personal health monitoring device.

The Washington Post wrote that many tech enthusiasts are also holding their breath for the debut of the iWatch, but no one has a clue where in Apple's product cycles that may fall, if it ever even debuts at all.

Others expect to hear announcements regarding a tune up of the company's Maps app, which continues to see problems after a very rocky rollout over a year ago.

Rumors have also swirled saying iTunes Radio will get its own standalone app outside of the "Music" app, Siri will be enabled with native song detection like that seen in the Shazam app, and new features will be announced for Touch ID, the fingerprint sensor included on the new iPhone 5S.

Minor pronouncements should include an update to Apple's desktop operating system, and perhaps details about Apple's line of laptops, only some of which have been given the company's signature Retina displays so far.

Some have said there will be announcements about the hardware of the upcoming iPhone, but most in-the-know technology websites have said this is more likely to occur in August or September as it has in the past.

Beats co-founders Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre — who recently sold their company to Apple for $3 billion — may also make an appearance, and perhaps the latter will even perform one of his classic rap hits.
