Issa Rae published a book three years ago and now an excerpt urging black women and Asian men to date has resurfaced to mixed reactions.
Rae wrote the memoir, "The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girls," before becoming a known actress on the set of HBO's "Insecure."
Now a particular section in which she compares the plight of Asian men and black women facing the same stereotypes and proposing they "join forces in love, marriage, and procreation" has come back to haunt her, The Wrap reported.
The text has sparked a heated debate on social media.
"The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl attempts to explain awkward situations or conundrums," one Twitter user wrote.
"What does that have to do with Black women/Asian men? Both, from Issa's perspective, have a bad dating reputation. Her tongue in cheek solution? Date each other."
Critics also had their views but the tweet storm has highlighted a deeper issue. Central to debates is that black women feel they are often demeaned by black men.
"If a black man said what Issa Rae said y'all would flip," one person posted to Twitter while another added that "all these angry black men mad at Issa Rae like they even want or care about black women."
Odyssey writer Gabrielle Oliver addressed this in a blogpost recently.
"Being an African-American girl, it's not surprising that I've experienced being put down or bashed by young black men; I can recall various experiences from my elementary school, middle school, and high school years," she wrote. "Unfortunately, for most black girls, this is not an uncommon occurrence. Today, black women are especially made fun of and degraded via social media."
