Will Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith shocked fans when she made a shockingly personal confession recently. The actress admitted to having a "porn addiction" at one point in her life. The 47-year-old star, who has been married to Will for 21 years, made the startling revelation Monday during the latest episode of her Facebook Watch series, "Red Table Talk."
Sitting down with daughter Willow Smith and mother Adrienne Banfield-Jones to discuss the negative effects porn can have on a person's life, Jada got candid about her "unhealthy relationship" to it.
"If I was still on my porn game, I'd be able to show you some good porn," she said as the trio prepared for the episode, according to Fox News. "Back in the day I had a little porn addiction, but I wasn't in a relationship when I had a porn addiction, believe it or not, thank goodness."
Later in the episode Jada backtracked on her previous remarks about being addicted to porn, clarifying that she had used the word "addiction" too lightly.
"And maybe I’ll say now that I had an unhealthy relationship to porn at one point in my life where I was trying to practice abstinence," she explained.
Addiction or unhealthy relationship, either way it’s a stunning admission.
During their conversation, Willow asked her mother whether she thought her "fixation" on porn may have stemmed from an "emotional" place.
"It was actually like feeling like an emptiness, at least you think it is," Jada said. "But it's actually not."
The topic was an interesting choice for Jada but is one relevant in today’s life. A previous report by KMGH noted that addiction to porn is one of the fastest growing addictions in America. Sex therapist Chris Simon likened the addiction to crack-cocaine, which grips children between the ages of 12 and 17.
"The pornography industry is really out to get kids hooked on it at an early age because they know that's when they're most pliable, they're most easily influenced because of their brain development," Simon said. "We don’t understand the ramifications of porn on the brain. I know what it feels like but I don’t know how deep it goes, I don’t understand the roots to why it’s so addicting, I don’t understand any of that. A therapist is required to obtain sobriety. A 12-step group, a support group is required to have friends who understand you. These are tools that have to be in place for it to work."
