James DiMaggio's family has requested DNA samples from Hannah Anderson's family to determine if the slain kidnapper is the biological father of Anderson and her younger brother Ethan.
DiMaggio, 40,
was killed by FBI agents on Aug. 10 in a remote stretch of Idaho, after he kidnapped Anderson and allegedly murdered her mother and Ethan Anderson, 8.

DiMaggio's life insurance policy raised questions about his relationship with the children, as the policy named Hannah and Ethan's grandmother, Bernice Anderson, as beneficiaries,
according to CNN. The life insurance policy payout was $110,000.
"We find it very strange that he has left all this money without any explanation," DiMaggio family spokesman Andrew Spanswick told CNN affiliate KGTV. "It states specifically that he didn't want to give it to either (of Hannah and Ethan Anderson's parents) cause he didn't trust them."
DiMaggio was best friends with Hannah and Ethan's father and was so close to the Anderson family that the children called him "Uncle Jim."
The Anderson family threw cold water on the theory that DiMaggio is the father.
"Brett and Tina Anderson did not meet Mr. DiMaggio until the sixth month of Tina's pregnancy with Hannah," the family said in a statement, according to CNN. "Brett Anderson's DNA was used to identify the body of his dead son Ethan Anderson."
The San Diego Union-Tribune reported Tuesday that the county sheriff's department believes
DiMaggio used a timing device to set fire to the rural home where
Tina and Ethan Anderson were found dead, which gave him a 20-hour head start with Hannah Anderson.
A San Diego sheriff's department spokesman said a Border Patrol surveillance camera caught DiMaggio traveling at a westbound highway checkpoint with Hannah Anderson at 12:10 a.m. Aug. 4, about 20 hours before his home caught fire.
Discovery of the timer prompted investigators to warn the public during the manhunt for Hannah Anderson that
DiMaggio's car might be rigged with explosives. Investigators found an incendiary device, handcuff boxes, and "arson wire" at the home.
