Jane Fonda is opening up about her Hollywood romances. In an interview with The New York Times, the 82-year-old revealed that she regretted not having sex with singer-songwriter Marvin Gaye and also found Marlon Brando "disappointing."
The topic came about during a quick round of "Confirm or Deny" questions with Times reporter Maureen Dowd, who asked if her greatest regret was not having sex with Che Guevara.
"No, I don’t think about him. Who I do think about, and what is a great regret is Marvin Gaye," Fonda said. "He wanted to and I didn’t. I was married to Tom [Hayden]."
Fonda and Hayden were married for 17 years before they divorced in 1990. Fonda recalled meeting Gaye through a mutual acquaintance.
"I was meeting a lot of performers to try to do concerts for Tom and the woman who was helping me do that introduced me to Marvin Gaye," she said.
Dowd responded by jokingly asking whether or not Gaye's pickup line included the words "sexual healing."
"I needed some but he didn’t say that, no," Fonda replied. "But then I read, apparently he had my picture on his refrigerator. I didn’t find that out until later, after he was dead."
The conversation then turned to Brando, who Fonda starred alongside in the 1966 drama "The Chase." According to the actress, Brando's charm and good looks did not work on her. Instead, she found him "disappointing," although she admitted he was a good actor.
Fonda has previously spoken about her love life and decision to be single in an interview with People. She admitted to being "defined by men" in her life right up until her sixties.
"I was brought up to please," she said. "I wanted my father to love me so I would turn myself into a pretzel to be what he wanted me to be, not necessarily what I already was. It took me getting into my sixties, and then I began to become who I was supposed to be all along."
