Jane Pauley's New Book Explores Retirement for Today's Seniors

As Jane Pauley navigates her early 60s, she’s offering Baby Boomers a look at the possibilities for their lives in her new book, “Your Life Calling: Reimagining the Rest of Your Life.”

Pauley said the book is about looking at retirement differently.

“I borrow a phrase from a friend of mine in my book, that retirement is no longer a door marked ‘exit,’” Pauley told USA Today. “Think instead of a door that swings on a hinge moving you from one thing into something else.”

People want to stay productive but may take on a new kind of work, Pauley said. The book is a lot like a segment Pauley does on "Today," along with AARP, called “Life Reimagined,” USA Today said. It explores different examples of people who took a different approach to their retirement years.

Answering a question from USA Today reporter Jocelyn McClurg about people looking for something more, Pauley said, “I think your goals in life change. In your 20s it's the job hunt, the ‘I got the offer!’ or maybe it's the promotion, or maybe your goal is another zero at the end of your paycheck. Our values change and the job doesn't do it anymore. What people are looking for is an opportunity to give or to do or to create something that gives you a sense of meaning.”

Pauley also chatted about her recent role as guest host on "Today" with Bryant Gumbel and what it was like to be back.

“Bryant and I have remained very good friends all of these years, so it's not unusual for us to be together,” she told McClurg.

Pauley’s twins, who are 30, were on the show for their birthday Dec. 30, delivering a birthday cake to Lauer who shares their special day. In the past, she kept her children away from her famous job. Pauley said she and husband Garry Trudeau were careful about keeping their children away from the spotlight.
