Janet Jackson, Billionaire: Singer-Actress Enjoys Financial Success

Michael Jackson may always be the "King of Pop," but his little sister is probably feeling like a queen. Variety magazine has reported Janet Jackson is an official member of the billion-dollar club.

Jackson's financial status is anchored by her successful career. She joins the ranks of Madonna, George Lucas, Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg and author J.K. Rowling as a billionaire in the entertainment industry.

Here's the breakdown to her billion: $458 million for concert tours, $304 million for acting roles, $260 million in album sales, and another $81 million from sponsorships.

As impressive as those totals are, she’s not the only billionaire in her household. Jackson’s husband, retail entrepreneur Wissam Al Mana, is also a billionaire. The two married in a private ceremony last year.

Al Mana, a Qatar native, runs 50 companies in the Middle East, including ventures in real estate, automotive distribution, engineering and construction, and retail.

Always a popular concert draw, Jackson’s biggest albums came early in her career with "Control" (1986), "Rhythm Nation 1814" (1989) and "Janet" (1993). She has sold more than 100 million records, making her one of the best-selling artists in contemporary music history. In 2010, Billboard magazine ranked her No. 5 on the Top 50 R&B/Hip-Hop Artists of the past 25 years.

She began her acting career with a small role in the 1970s sitcom “Good Times” and later expanded into movies with “The Nutty Professor,” “Poetic Justice,” “Why Did I Get Married,” and “For Colored Girls.”

Jackson has seemed to move on from her wardrobe malfunction in Super Bowl XXXVII with fellow singer/actor Justin Timberlake, which got both into hot water with the Federal Communication Commission.

Even in death, her brother has the bigger income. CBS’s 60 Minutes reported last week that since Michael Jackson’s death in 2009, his estate has taken in $600 million. That’s more than any living artist over that period of time. Michael Jackson’s pre-concert movie “This is It” has brought in $500 million.
