Janet Jackson is indeed pregnant at age 50 and it's going well, her brother Tito Jackson said on Sirius XM's "Andy Cohen Live" Monday, putting to rest rumors that the entertainer was using a surrogate.
Jackson, who turned 50 on May 16, canceled scheduled concert dates earlier this year because she was expecting her first child with husband Wissam Al Mana, said
Sirius XM. She was reported to be in the second trimester last month.
"She's doing very well," Tito Jackson, 62, told the radio show, per Sirius XM. "She's taking it easy. As you know, she is off tour, protecting her health."
"I know she's hoping for a healthy baby. She doesn't know whether she's going to have a boy or girl, but she just wants a healthy baby," said Tito Jackson, who grew up as member of the Jackson 5.
AARP last year quoted figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showing that births by women aged 50 to 54 jumped by more than 165 percent from 2000 (255 births) to 2013 (677 births).
Bonnie Steinbock, a bioethicist and professor emeritus at the University at Albany in New York, told AARP that some worry if the older parents will "possess the requisite stamina" to raise children.
"They wonder how she will handle a recalcitrant toddler in the terrible twos," Steinbock said, according to AARP. "Will she be able to relate? Will the child feel embarrassed because the parents look like everyone else's grandparents?"
AARP also pointed out medical risks in such pregnancies, like gestational hypertension, diabetes, and preeclampsia — a pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure and possible organ damage.
Another Jackson 5 member, Jermaine Jackson, told People magazine last month that he was excited about his little sister's pregnancy.
"My sister Janet is my baby. She is fine but she's having a baby," he said. "A baby having a baby. We look at her like our little baby and now she’s grown and having a baby. I'm proud to be an uncle and I can't wait to see how this baby is going to look."
"I hope she's having a girl," he added. "We need more girls in the family. There are too many boys."
