By    |   Tuesday, 19 November 2013 07:25 AM EST

Eight of PGA golfer Jason Day's family members, including his grandmother, were killed when Typhoon Haiyan ripped through the Philippines earlier this month, the Australian golfer announced Monday.

"I am deeply saddened to confirm that multiple members of my family lost their lives as the victims of Typhoon Haiyan," Day, a member on the PGA Tour, said in a statement. "My family and I are thankful for all who have reached out with their prayers and concern."

Day, whose mother reportedly migrated from the Philippines to Australia more than 30 years ago, had extended family that lived in the Southeast Asian nation. According to CNN, Day's grandmother, uncle, and six of his cousins perished in the storm. Haiyan, which was the second-deadliest Philippine typhoon on record, claimed nearly 4,000 lives, with another 1,500 people still unaccounted for.

"We feel devastated for all who have been affected by this horrific tragedy," Day, 26, said in the statement. "While I understand the media's interest in this matter and hope that any coverage can spread awareness to assist with the relief efforts that continue in the Philippines, I hope that all will respect my family's privacy during this difficult time.

"I will have no further public comments at this time. Please pray for all who have suffered loss."

Many expressed their condolences to Day via Twitter.

Day is scheduled to play in the World Cup of Golf Thursday in Melbourne.
