Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez have officially split up.
The two have been a couple since 2017, but on Thursday announced that they were calling off their two-year engagement in a joint statement to "Today."
"We have realized we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so," Lopez and Rodriguez said. "We will continue to work together and support each other on our shared businesses and projects. We wish the best for each other and one another’s children. Out of respect for them, the only other comment we have to say is thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and support."
Rumors that the pair had broken up first emerged in March. TMZ, citing unnamed sources, was among the first outlets to break the news, but days later Lopez and Rodriguez released a statement explaining that the report was false.
"All the reports are inaccurate," they said. "We are working through some things."
Rodriguez later flew to the Dominican Republic to be with Lopez. He revealed his location, where Lopez was filming for her new movie "Shotgun Wedding," on Instagram.
"Happy Monday. New week. New day. Onward. Upward," he posted in an Instagram story showing a luxury resort overlooking the ocean on Monday. He tagged Lopez in the post.
At the time, multiple sources also told "Today" that the two "never officially broke up" and were still together.
"They hit a rough patch that made them think about what they should do," the sources added.
Insiders also told Page Six that Lopez and Rodriguez were "trying to work through things" but it was unclear "if that means they are staying together. "
The sources said that, for the last few weeks, Lopez and Rodriguez had not been together and the last few days "were not good."
"They’ve been having some crazy issues," the sources said.
Lopez first hinted at trouble in paradise in December, when she admitted they had spoken about not getting married.
She and Rodriguez were forced to put their wedding on hold amid the coronavirus pandemic and Lopez revealed to Andy Cohen during an appearance on his radio show last year that she was in "no rush" to tie the knot.
"We've talked about (not getting married) for sure," Lopez said in response to a question about Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell's decision to not get married, according to Daily Mail.
"But the same thing with like the Goldie thing and Kurt, you think, do you have to? Should we?" Lopez added. "It just kind of gave us a moment to pause and think about it. And I think it's something that maybe is still important to us, but there's no rush, you know, there's no rush, it'll happen when it happens."
