Jennifer Lopez will play Miami drug lord Griselda Blanco, known as the "Cocaine Godmother," in an upcoming HBO film.

Blanco was the most powerful female cartel member during the 1970s and '80s and revolutionized the drug trade, Variety reported, noting that the film will focus on her rise and fall.

“I’ve been fascinated by the life of this corrupt and complicated woman for many years,” said Lopez, who will also serve as an executive producer on the project via her Nuyorican Productions banner. “The idea of teaming with HBO felt like the perfect fit for finally bringing Griselda’s story to life.”

Lopez currently stars in the NBC drama "Shades of Blue."

The HBO project follows USA Network's successful drama "Queen of the South," which is partially inspired by Blanco's story, The Hollywood Reporter noted.

Blanco was a subject in the documentary "Cocaine Cowboys." She reportedly trafficked 300 kilos of cocaine a month and ordered dozens of murders during her prime. She was killed in Colombia in September 2012.

Blanco's tactics included such measures as designing custom bras and girdles to hide cocaine, Rolling Stone reported. Convicted of three murders, Blanco spent nearly two decades in a U.S. prison before being deported to Colombia in 2004.

Twitter users shared mixed reactions to the announcement.
