"Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek opened up about his battle with cancer on Wednesday's "Good Morning America," admitting he experienced moments of "deep, deep sadness."
The 78-year-old was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in March and although his oncologist said he was doing well, Trebek said he still felt overwhelming sadness.
"It bring tears to my eyes," he gold GMA's Robin Roberts but was quick to assure he was fighting through it. "My platelets are steady, my blood counts are steady, my weight is steady," he noted, adding it helped to have the support of the nation behind him.
"People all over America have been sharing their good thoughts, their advice, their prayers," he said. "And I feel it's been making a difference."
Trebek first revealed his cancer diagnoses in a heartfelt video in which he vowed he was "going to fight this," and would "keep working." True to his word, Trebek was back at work days later to continue production on "Jeopardy!" However, behind the scenes, he has been working through the range of emotions commonly experienced by people who have just been diagnosed with cancer.
Denial, anxiety, depression, and sadness are all common feelings to have, The National Cancer Institute reported. Trebek told Roberts, while he did have moments of extreme sadness, he has made contact with so many people who have survived cancer and it has inspired him.
"I am now a 30-day survivor . . . I'm going to catch up to those other people," he said.
Trebek echoed a similar determination in a separate interview in which he vowed to overcome the cancer.
"With the love and support of my family and friends and with the help of your prayers also, I plan to beat the low survival rate statistics for this disease," he said, according to Pop Culture.
