The son of Boston Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy pleaded guilty in court Tuesday to murdering his girlfriend last year, and received a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole.
Jared Remy, 35, admitted to fatally stabbing 27-year-old Jennifer Martel and attacking neighbors who tried to stop him, all while the couple's 4-year-old daughter watched.

He pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, assault and battery, and violating a restraining order, among other charges.
Remy's public confession relieves Martel's family and friends from additional pain brought on by a trial. Remy passed on using anxiety, depression, and steroid and prescription drug use as part of his defense.
"I am here today not for a deal but to take responsibility for what I have done,"
Remy told the judge, The Associated Press reported. "I would like to say blame me for this, not my family."
His parents didn't attend the hearing because Remy specially told them not to come.
In admitting guilt, Remy called himself a "bad apple," and referred to Martel as "an angel," but said he killed her because she threatened him with a knife.
"She had a knife in her hand. She was threatening me about my daughter,"
Remy told the judge, according to The Boston Globe. "So I killed her."
Assistant District Attorney Lisa McGovern recounted that Remy stabbed Martel in the throat, legs, arms, and torso, and punched her in the face. The attack began in the couple's Waltham apartment, and continued on the outside patio.
Martel's parents, as well as other family members, were present for the sentencing.
"We do not have words to express our emotions regarding the tragic and senseless murder of our daughter, Jennifer," the Martel family said in a statement. We hope that Jared has remorse for what he did to her and to our granddaughter. If just one family learns from our tragedy by recognizing the warning signs of domestic violence, it will help us to honor Jennifer's memory."
