Former Victoria’s Secret supermodel Jessica Hart always had to look beautiful for the runway but life out of the spotlight could sometimes be a nightmare. The beauty has revealed that she had been drinking heavily and partying hard since she was 13 years old.
Now sober, the 33-year-old spent the last 20 years living a fast life.
"I was a rebellious child, always up to no good, wagging [skipping] school constantly to smoke weed in the park," Hart revealed in a personal account in the latest edition of Harper’s Bazaar Australia.
Hart started modeling at 14 and, while it initially taught her responsibility and maturity, the fast-paced lifestyle soon caught up with her.
"In this industry, even the most successful models don't work every day. If I didn't have work for a few days, I could go out, proudly drink most people under the table and come home as the sun was rising, Hart wrote. "A few drinks didn't interest me. I was 'go hard or go home'. And home was never the answer."
Hart recalled hopping between parties while traveling Europe throughout her 20s, flitting from Ibiza to Mykonos. And once a drink was in her hand, she would not stop. It was only after years of heavy drinking that the former supermodel started to think about what she was doing to her body. It was at that point that she decided to make a change.
"One morning, when I was in my early 30s, I finally pulled the plug. I just woke up one morning and said, 'This is it,'" Hart said. "I wanted to look after myself. 'My body is a temple' is a saying I once would have laughed at, but I wanted to respect this vessel that is taking me through life. I'd put it through so much and it was time to give back."
Hart admitted that she did not want to be the girl people spoke about in hushed voices when her back was turned.
"I didn't want to be that girl people whisper about: 'She was beautiful once, but she partied too much!,'" she wrote. "I looked at friends who live sober lives and have great families and successful businesses. I often thought, I want that. That other path — the one I was on — was simply unfulfilling."
