Jesus Misspelled on Thousands of Pope Francis Medals (Photo)

After discovering the name of Jesus was misspelled on thousands of papal medals made to commemorate the beginning of Pope Francis' papacy, the Vatican has recalled the medals that refer to "Lesus" instead of Jesus.

More than 6,000 silver and bronze papal medals, and another 200 gold ones, were recalled, The Telegraph reports. The medals featured a portrait of Pope Francis, as well as the Latin phrase: "Vidit ergo Jesus publicanum et quia miserando atque eligendo vidit, ait illi sequere me."

The phrase, which Pope Francis has said inspired him to join the priesthood, means, "Jesus, therefore, saw the publican, and because he saw by having mercy and by choosing, He said to him, 'Follow me.'"

The medals went on sale Oct. 8, but were withdrawn two days later, when the mistake was discovered. Four had already been sold and will become sought-after collector's items, according to a Catholic News Service Twitter post.

The former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio became the first Jesuit pope following a March election, after Benedict XVI resigned.
