An Israeli geologist claims to have discovered proof of the tomb of Jesus, along with evidence that Jesus had a wife and son.
Aryeh Shimron claims that soil with a unique geochemical signature connects two disputed archeological finds, bolstering
claims that they are tied to Jesus of Nazareth, The New York Times reported.
The disputed artifacts include an ossuary, or burial box, with the inscription “James son of Joseph brother of Jesus” that surfaced in the 1970s. The connection to Jesus has been disputed, with some calling the “brother of Jesus” portion of the inscription a forgery.
The other artifact is a tomb, known as the Talpiot Tomb, discovered in 1980, which included ossuaries with inscriptions such as as “Jesus son of Joseph,” “Mary.” Skeptics have dismissed claims that the tomb was that of the family of Jesus of Nazareth.
“I think I’ve got really powerful, virtually unequivocal evidence that the James ossuary spent most of its lifetime, or death time, in the Talpiot Tomb,” Shimron said, according to The New York Times.
The discovery is seen by some as proof that
Jesus was buried with nine other people, including a son named Judah and a wife named Mary, The Jerusalem Post reported.
“But there was something here that becomes theologically upsetting to Christians,” Canadian-Israeli filmmaker-journalist Simha Jacobovici said, according to the Post. “Many people believe that Jesus spiritually rose to heaven. But many others believe that he stood up, left the tomb, and physically went up. But now there’s a bone box here with his tomb, that’s not good.”
Some remain skeptical about the new evidence, including Oded Golan, who owns the James ossuary.
“It is very interesting but not enough to determine anything conclusively,” Golan said, according to the Times. “You would need samples from at least 200 to 300 caves.”
Twitter users commented about the discovery.
