Jim Harbaugh to the Rescue When Car Crashes on Interstate

By    |   Thursday, 05 March 2015 10:40 AM EST

Jim Harbaugh, the University of Michigan's new football coach, helped rescue victims of a car crash on Interstate 94 in Ann Arbor.

Harbaugh, the former San Francisco 49ers coach known to almost everyone for his love of khaki pants, was traveling eastbound on I-94 on Tuesday with James Minick, a member of the university's athletic staff, when they witnessed a one-vehicle crash that started in the westbound lane of the interstate, state police told WDIV-TV.

A Jeep Cherokee had lost control, crossed the center median wall, overturned and ended up in the eastbound lanes.

Harbaugh and Minick helped a 73-year-old women from the vehicle and Minick gave first aid to the 53-year-old driver before emergency personnel arrived. Both victims were taken to St. Joseph Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

University of Michigan associate athletic director Dave Ablauf told the Detroit Free Press that Harbaugh and Minick had been on their way to the airport.

They "got the people out of the car, did a little medical treatment, and gave them a coat," said Ablauf, adding that the two men stayed at the scene for a half-hour while police and emergency personnel took over.

Harbaugh posted a message on Twitter afterward, pushing the praise on Minick, a friend of his whom recently retired from the military, according to the Free Press.

The Free Press reported that the roads in southeastern Michigan were in poor condition Tuesday because of freezing rain, snow and sleet.

Harbaugh, who played his college football at Michigan, was named the school's football coach on Dec. 30. Before that, he had led San Francisco to the Super Bowl and NFC championship game in four years as head coach there with an overall 49-22-1 record.
